The driver seal presses into your hubshell, over the drivering, and creates a light contact seal on the driver body. This is the main seal keeping oil in you hub and contamination out.
Seals are wear parts that should be replaced as part of a regular maintenance routine to ensure best oil retention and contamination resistance.
